Writing a Band A SPM English 1119 Continuous Essay
The continuous writing question in SPM English 1119 Paper 1 carries 50 marks and is the single biggest opportunity in the paper. Unlike directed writing, where the format is fixed, continuous writing lets you choose your topic and structure — which means the marks reward how well you craft your response, not just whether you cover the content.
Choose Your Question Wisely
You will choose one of five topics, usually a mix of narrative, descriptive, argumentative, expository, and reflective essays. Pick the one that lets you write comfortably and personally. If you have a strong real story, choose narrative. If you can argue with examples, choose argumentative. Avoid a topic you find interesting if you cannot sustain it for 350 words — running out of ideas halfway is what sinks otherwise strong candidates.
The Five-Paragraph Skeleton
A reliable structure is an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. The introduction sets the scene, hooks the reader, and states your central idea. Each body paragraph develops one main point with an example, a sensory detail, or a step in the story. The conclusion reflects on the experience or restates the argument in fresh words — never a word-for-word repeat of the introduction.
Show, Do Not Tell
The difference between a Band C and a Band A descriptive essay is specificity. Instead of writing 'the market was noisy,' write 'hawkers shouted prices over the clatter of woks and the hiss of steaming kuih.' Concrete sensory detail — sound, smell, touch, taste, sight — transforms generic writing into writing an examiner remembers.
For narrative essays, use dialogue sparingly but powerfully. A single line of dialogue in the right place moves the story forward and breaks up description. Use short sentences for tension, longer ones for reflection. Vary your sentence length throughout — a uniform rhythm reads flat.
Vocabulary and Sentence Variety
Examiners reward ambitious, accurate vocabulary over safe, repetitive word choice. Replace 'good' with 'exceptional,' 'big' with 'colossal,' 'said' with 'whispered,' 'shouted,' or 'mumbled' — but only when the word is correct. A misused impressive word is worse than a simple one used well. Keep a personal list of twenty versatile descriptive words you can deploy across any topic.
Sentence variety means mixing simple, compound, and complex sentences. Start a few sentences with -ing phrases ('Stumbling through the rain, I clutched the parcel tighter.'), with adverbs ('Unexpectedly, the door swung open.'), or with subordinate clauses. This shows control and earns language marks.
Linking Devices and Coherence
Coherence is what makes an essay read as one piece rather than five separate paragraphs. Use linkers: 'meanwhile,' 'in contrast,' 'consequently,' 'eventually,' 'nevertheless.' Place them at the start of paragraphs and between ideas within paragraphs. But beware overuse — four linkers in a single paragraph reads mechanical.
Editing in the Last Ten Minutes
Reserve the final ten minutes for editing. Read your essay once for content (does it answer the question?), once for language (tense consistency, subject-verb agreement), and once for accuracy (spelling, punctuation, capitalisation). Common slips include switching between past and present tense in a narrative, forgetting articles, and comma splices — joining two full sentences with only a comma.
Practise Before the Exam
Write one full essay a week in the months before SPM, under timed conditions (one hour). Have a teacher or strong peer mark it using the public SPM 1119 bands. Track the recurring errors — most students make the same five mistakes — and target them in the next essay. Improvement is steady and measurable if you write regularly.
